New Malden · KT3

Web design and development for New Malden.

New Malden has a commercial character you do not find anywhere else in London, and a fair few businesses here need a website that works for two audiences at once rather than one.

Where we are

Two and a half miles away.

Our office is in Tolworth, a short run from New Malden. Close enough that coming out is routine rather than something to arrange weeks ahead, which suits the retail and restaurant work we do here — photographing a premises and working out what the site actually has to show is hard to do remotely.

The rest of a project still runs better over email and a staging link you can open whenever you like than in a standing meeting, wherever we happen to be.

Discuss a project
Locally

Two audiences, one website.

New Malden is home to the largest Korean community in Europe, and that shapes the high street — restaurants, supermarkets, specialist retail and professional services that trade with both the local Korean community and the wider area. A good share of the briefs we see here involve a site that has to work for both: two languages, sometimes two quite different ideas of what a good website looks like, and the practical business of getting non-Latin characters to display and search properly rather than turning into question marks.

That is a real technical problem rather than a translation exercise. Character encoding, fonts that actually contain the glyphs, search that matches the right words, and URLs that survive being shared — these are the things that quietly break when a site is retrofitted into a second language instead of being built for it. We have done multilingual builds across several projects and the lesson is consistent: it is far cheaper to plan for the second language than to add it afterwards.

Away from the high street, the rest of New Malden looks like most of outer south west London — trades, dental and medical practices, small professional firms, and a long tail of businesses whose website was built once and never touched again.

What we do

What New Malden clients ask us for most.

We do the same work wherever the client is — these are simply the parts that come up most often here.

Related work

Projects of a similar shape.

Much of our work is delivered white label or under agreement, so these describe the problem and the approach rather than naming the client.

Other areas we work in.

We take on work across south west London and UK-wide. Around New Malden that regularly includes Raynes Park, Motspur Park, Worcester Park, Kingston, Malden Rushett and Coombe.

Questions

What New Malden clients ask.

Can you build a site in Korean as well as English?
We can build the site properly bilingual — the structure, the character handling, the search, the admin so your team can edit both sides, and URLs that work when somebody shares them. What we do not do is write or check the Korean copy; that needs a native speaker, and we would rather you used one than trusted us with it.
Our current site shows question marks instead of characters. Can that be fixed?
Usually yes. That is almost always an encoding problem somewhere between the database, the page and the font, and it is fixable without rebuilding the site. It is worth checking the database itself first, because occasionally the original characters have already been lost on the way in, which is a different and more awkward job.
We are a restaurant. Do we need ecommerce or just a website?
Often just a website that makes the menu easy to read on a phone and the booking obvious. Ordering and delivery usually run better through an existing platform than through something custom, unless you are doing enough volume that the commission starts to matter. We will tell you which side of that line you are on.

Tell us what the site has to do.

Not just what it should look like. We will tell you what it would take, what it would cost, and when something cheaper would get you most of the way — before you have committed to anything.
