Battersea · SW11 / SW8

Web design and development for Battersea.

A lot of businesses here are young and growing fast, which creates a specific problem: looking established enough to be trusted before you have the history to prove it.

Locally

New businesses with a credibility problem.

The regeneration around the Power Station and Nine Elms has pulled in a particular mix: technology and creative firms, newer professional practices, and food and drink businesses opening their first or second site. Many are two or three years old and competing against firms twenty years older.

That shapes what the website has to do. It cannot lean on heritage, so it has to demonstrate competence instead — being clear about what you actually do, showing the work, and being well made enough that nobody wonders whether you are a going concern. For a young business the site is often the only evidence a prospect has.

The second thing is growth. A site built tightly around what the business does this year becomes an obstacle the year after. It is worth deciding early which parts are likely to change — services, locations, team, whether you will sell online — and building so those can grow without starting again.

Questions

What Battersea clients ask.

We are new. How do we look credible without overclaiming?
By being specific rather than impressive. Clear explanation of what you do and who for, real detail about the work, and a site that is well made. Vague superlatives read as covering for a lack of substance; specifics read as confidence. We will also tell you when a claim is one you cannot support.
We might add ecommerce later. Does that change things now?
It changes a few structural decisions, which is exactly why it is worth saying up front. Building so a shop can be added later is straightforward; retrofitting one into a site that never anticipated it usually is not.
What is the smallest sensible first site?
Something that explains what you do, shows evidence you can do it, and makes contact easy. For a young business that is usually enough, and spending the rest of the budget on getting in front of people beats a larger site nobody has seen.
Will we outgrow it?
Partly, and that is normal. What we try to avoid is outgrowing the foundation, which is the expensive version. Growing out of the design is cheap; growing out of the architecture is not.
Next step

Tell us what the site has to do.

Not just what it should look like. We will tell you what it would take, what it would cost, and when something cheaper would get you most of the way — before you have committed to anything.
